Raanta is not a top 5 goalie in the NHL

and Stepan, while a really good two way player, is quite overpaid.

Rantaa most definitely is a top five goalie: He's in a class with Vasilevkiy, Andersen, Bobrovsky and Gibson.

Those four guys all have career save %s around .920

As for Stepan, his numbers on a bad team in a very tough role are outstanding and he's worth every single dollar.

Despite his usage? No such thing, it all equals out in the end...so I was told.

“Raanta is a top 5 goalie in the NHL, and outside of Jake Gardiner, Stepan might be the most underrated player.”

Holy hell this might be the most ridiculous statement I’ve ever read.

Lots of goalies have save % around .920 Price, Rask, Bishop, Schnieder, Lundqviust, Luongo, Rinne, Lehner, Crawford, Grubauer etc

Don't see that as a solid argument for Raanta being a top 5. He's good but a .920 just puts him in the top half-ish of the league, with a small sample size due to injury.

That is in no way what I told you. Usage maters, just not to the degree people think. And it's also pretty rare that a player is used like Stepan is. Most teams are deeper and as such, much more fluid.

On a team at near cap floor doesn't mind Stepans cap hit, but on teams that are well in their cup contention window and teams that have established themselves as a perennial good team would not want his contract..plain and simple.

You don’t get a Selke nomination with 40ish points. Don’t care how bad his linemates suck

Potential Selke nominee? The guy is a minus 3. I get the Coyotes are not very good, but isn't it usually a guy like Bergeron or Kopitar who puts up 60+ pts and has a crazy +/-? 50ish pts and a minus player isn't really an ideal candidate for best 2 way player.

Ek was in touch with the league about the 3 points for a win.

The League had never considered it.

They explained to Ek that the current systems keeps more teams in it for longer. Ek explained this to us. Before the EKsplanation, Nobody here had ever considered that or discussed it more than thousands of times.

This kind of insight is clearly outside our pay grade.

Seriously?

Price, Holtby, Rask, (and Quick and Crawford minus this year) all have better numbers and much larger sample sizes. If you're going on a sample size about the same as Raanta, you can include Binnington and Lehner, the likely Jennings trophy winner, because this year, whether you want to admit it or not, counts.

I would really hope that plus minus doesn't enter into it at all, but based on the track record of the NHL awards, that's a pretty thin hope.

Do they nominate a player from every team for each award now? Stepan MIGHT be a top 31 selke nominee...MIGHT

This comment about teams that are much deeper is coming from the blogger that at the very beginning of the season said the Coyotes were a top 5 roster in the NHL. Which one is it Tanner? Top 5 in the NHL or not very deep?

That was almost as outlandish and farfetched as the Twain POF hookup or whatever the Ek that story was.
I bet he "speaks" with people at the NHL executive level all the time.

Robin "Trash Heap" Lehner has a career .918 and he played more than half his games with the Sabres.

Edit: Late.

Honestly, they are proving to be very deep lately. Ton of players lost due to injury, most in NHL, I think, and they have been on a tear. Losing Stepan will probably be too much to bear though
